The gold nib of an otherwise pitch black fountain pen coruscates in the warm glow of a single desk lamp.
The pen rests atop a small stack of papers adorned with the Global Championship Wrestling letterhead.
A shadow falls across the documents as a hand lifts up the pen and begins to write.
The nib scratches loudly on the parchment until a final flourish flicks it up away from the page and the pen is laid down to rest once more on the wooden desk.
The fresh ink glistens as it begins to dry in the heat radiating out from the incandescent bulb.
It is ink that irreversibly commits a signature to the blank space above a printed dotted line.
Drew Murdock has officially signed with GCW.
22nd June 2016
As the wrestling world begins to digest news of the GCW One PPV card, Drew Murdock shares a video about his upcoming debut.
#1: A New Beginning (aka Drew Reads Mean Tweets)
The video opens with Drew sat staring down the barrel of the lens with the camera in his hands.
He is captured in various states of blurriness while fiddling with the camera before it finally focuses completely on him and he rests it back on the tripod.
Drew is wearing a dark grey t-shirt beneath a zip-up hoodie which in turn lies below a studded, black leather jacket.
He has a flash of blonde in the messy brown quiff that he runs one hand up through while the other taps at his phone.
Drew: So, I've been the subject in a lot of tweets in these past 48 hours and it seems like a lot of people have a lot of questions.
Now, I don't officially start with GCW until 27th June of course and so strictly speaking I should probably keep quiet until then...
...but that really isn't how I roll, so I thought I'd make this video to help answer some of your questions.
Drew: Thanks for the warm welcome @gcwfan1. Great to have such an enthusiastic fan on board already.
So who am I? Well...I am a rebel, a cynic and a non-conformist.
For the last decade I have fought through the wrestling scene in my native UK and taken out anyone who got in my way.
I don't care if you are a respected veteran, a headline star or a hot prospect for the future - either way I will cynically take you apart and clinically destroy your reputation.
…well now, that’s enough of a sneak preview for now. You’ll find out exactly who I am at GCW One.
Drew: It would've been easy for me to stay back home in the UK.
I could've lived my life as a big fish in a small pond and done nothing to stop the rust of complacency setting in as I became part of the establishment that I've always found so tedious.
I needed a new beginning and a new challenge.
I am the rolling stone of the wrestling world.
I heard a lot of hype around GCW in some of the wrestling circles and after doing my research it was the logical next step for my career.
So I've watched from afar these past few weeks as the hierarchy of GCW has began to crystalise ahead of the first ever pay per view.
I've watched the GCW One card take shape in the fallout of results from Monday Vindication and gazed on as fellow GCW-ers celebrated their minor, inconsequential victories.
Come GCW we will see the first ever GCW International and GCW Heavyweight champions crowned and they will be elevated to the top of this fledgling pyramid.
The order of things is being established right as we speak.
Certain names and faces will rise to the top and take their place in the upper echelons of GCW.
As these names and faces get comfortable in their seats at the top table I will be ready to bring them crashing back to reality.
As soon as I see a name up in lights then I immediately relish the opportunity to cut the power and plunge that person back into the darkness of irrelevance.
People call me The Iconoclast because I have little time for the established traditions, the recognised leaders and the incumbent champions.
I don’t care what you have done or what you have achieved.
I am here simply to beat you.
Earlier today I heard Owen Hawes talk about his ambition to ‘conquer the Gods’ here in GCW and how he would do this by striking ‘the fear of the unknown’ into them.
Owen, there are no Gods and the unknown is not something worth fearing.
But seeing as you are something of an amateur philosopher – let’s see if we can find a philosophy that does work in GCW.
Now, your theory for rising to the top here seems to involve the ‘fear of the unpredictable nature of man’ and ‘exposing the flaws [of the Gods] to the world.'
Here is mine: I am the best wrestler in GCW and I will rise to the top through whatever means necessary.
Now, Occam’s razor suggests that when you have two competing theories that make exactly the same predictions, the simpler one is the better.
I think you’d agree that my theory is elegantly simple and, as you will all find out soon enough, it is unquestionably true.
So, if ‘the Gods’ have anything to fear here in GCW it is not the unknown – quite the opposite in fact, it is the inevitability that I will fight them, I will beat them and when its all said and done they will not be remembered as a champion or a hero.
They will be remembered as a statistic.
Drew: And so we come on to my debut. A one on one match with Rusty Camoly at the first ever GCW pay per view.
So, what do I know about Rusty?
Well, not a lot.
He seems to have been licking his wounds from afar ever since Jack Griffith hit him with the Jack in the Box at the beginning of the month.
At least Rusty has had plenty of time to acclimatise to the disappointment of defeat.
The devastation of another GCW loss is sure to hit him hard, especially at the company’s first pay-per-view but hopefully there is a silver lining to the gathering clouds above him.
In a few years time, when people are looking back on my career as a GCW Hall of Famer - the question “Who did Drew Murdock defeat on his debut in GCW?” will be asked in quizzes and trivia games.
More often than not the question will be met by an awkward silence and a disinterested shrug.
After all nobody really remembers who Ali beat in his first fight, or who the Cavs faced in game one of the season.
But...if he is really lucky…maybe every one in ten times that question is asked, somebody will just about recall the name ‘Rusty Camoly.’
Now, even if they remember the name, it will merely be the words.
They won’t remember anything about the person.
When I hit Rusty with Damnatio Memoriae at GCW One it will kick start my rise to the top and relegate him to nothing more than obscurity and irrelevance. --
History is written by the victor.
Rusty Camoly will be nothing more than a footnote in Chapter One of my story.
