It is ?:?? ??, ?? ??, ?, in a dark, senseless place. Mason Childers is running in a void of darkness. He keeps running in the hopes of stumbling upon something or someone of substance.
Mason:
"Is anyone there?! Help me! I don't know where I am!"
Mason keeps running. Eventually he comes upon a wooden door in the midst of the nothingness. He eagerly approaches it, turns the knob, and enters...
He comes out in the middle of a corn field on his family farm. He smiles.
Mason:
"I'm home."
Mason runs through the corn field to get to his house. The corn has grown well over Mason's head. After running for what felt like several minutes, he comes out of the field.
Mason:
"Finally..."
Mason starts toward the big red brick house that he's lived in his whole life, but he stops when he notices two figures heading into his Father's old barn. Mason looks closely at the two figures in the distance. They are both children. One slightly larger than the other. The larger one is holding the smaller one in a headlock and dragging him into the barn. Mason's eyes grow wide.
Mason:
"No! Jeremy!"
Mason races towards the barn as fast as he can.
Mason:
"Stop! Jeremy stoppp!"
The figures have disappeared into the barn. Mason is about to reach the open barn doors. Just as he gets to the doors, they rapidly slam shut. Mason begins panicking and throwing his weight into the door
Mason:
"JEREMY! NOOO!! OPEN UP DAMMIT!!"
Mason continues to shoulder check the door repeatedly in an attempt to open it. Finally, Mason takes a few steps back and charges at the door. The door shatters into pieces as Mason runs through it. On the other side, Mason looks around and finds himself back in the dark void from before.
Mason:
"JEREMY!!!!"

It is 4:00 AM, March 11, 2017, in Birmingham, AL. Mason opens his eyes in a hospital bed and starts sobbing. Cindy is there looking on in horror at her Father's despair-stricken face.
Mason:
(while sobbing) "Jeremy... I'm sorry..."
